Volunteering
The Illinois Leadership Seminar is made possible by
the 80+ volunteers who participate throughout the year. We are a
group dedicated to enhancing the lives of America's youth through
development of leadership skills. Approximately 1/3 of our volunteers
are involved in the year round planning of our seminars. 2/3rds
of our volunteers dedicate a long weekend in June to guiding students
through our seminar. Below is a list of volunteer positions and
descriptions.

Year Round Positions
Corporate Board Member
Corporate Board Members actively participate in the running of all
Northern Illinois Leadership Programs. Their role includes governance,
strategic decision making and fundraising. Most Corporate Board
Members have attended or participated in a TRAIL or Northern Illinois
Leadership Seminar in the past.
Donations Expert
We are actively recruiting individuals with interest in and experience
in nonprofit fundraising. This role includes a position on the Corporate
Board. We focus both on cash donations and in-kind donations.
Leadership Seminar Chairperson
The LSC is responsible for coordinating all volunteers involved
in planning the seminar. The role requires at least one year of
experience as a Northern Illinois Leadership Seminar volunteer and
active participation in back office activities during the seminar.
This may be the most rewarding volunteer role in existence.
Note that the role of Vice-Chairperson is available
to those volunteers with less Seminar experience who wish to take
over the LSC role in the future.
Alumni Advisor
Northern Illinois Leadership Seminar maintains an active alumni
program with over 400 participants. The Alumni Advisor is responsible
for coordinating social and community service activities for this
group. This role requires at least two years of experience working
with the seminar and alumni on a consistent basis.
Recruiting Chairperson
The Recruiting Chairperson is responsible for recruiting one high
school sophomore from every school in Illinois to attend our seminar.
Much of this effort is done via mail and fax. However, contacting
school guidance counselors by phone helps to ensure a healthy turnout!
No previous Northern Illinois Leadership Seminar experience is required
for this role. We will provide both training and equipment for this
position.
Programming Chairperson
Much of what makes our seminars successful is the dedicated, diverse
input of individuals throughout the community. We solicit speakers
from government, industry, education, volunteerism and many other
roles to provide insight to our students. The Programming Chairperson
is responsible for coordinating development of the weekend program
and inviting appropriate speakers to support the program.
Community Service Chairperson
In order to introduce community service type events to our students,
we help them to conduct their own community service project at the
seminar. The Community Service Chairperson is responsible for identifying
various projects that can be conducted on-site.
Leadership Committee Members At-Large
If you have a particular skill, odd times in which you can volunteer,
or simply want to be more closely involved with the Illinois Leadership
Seminar, let us know. We will work with you to find a role that
fits your skills and needs.
Seminar Weekend Roles
Note that people who volunteer for seminar
weekend need to set aside Thursday, June 21 starting at 7pm to Sunday,
June 24 at 4pm. As we are monitoring 200+ high school sophomores
24 hours/day, all volunteers stay at North Park University throughout
the weekend. Northern Illinois Leadership Seminar provides room and
board to all volunteers throughout the weekend.
Volunteer positions below are for the seminar weekend
and require
DCFS and Criminal Background Checks in order to participate.
Coach
A coach is responsible for guiding approximately 10 high school
sophomores through the leadership seminar. You will be leading small
group discussion, keeping your students involved, challenging them
to think, speak and ask questions. Past coaches have treasured their
experiences with students and often stay in touch with them long
after the seminar. All Facilitators are supported throughout the
weekend by alumni of Northern Illinois Leadership Seminar - also
known as Assistant Coaches.
Logistics Coordination Team
Providing for the needs of 200 high school sophomores throughout
a long weekend is a challenging effort. Logistics Coordinators are
responsible for ensuring the needs of volunteers and students are
consistently met in every location on campus. This role is an active,
physical one and can require heavy lifting.
Logistics Coordinators need to be at the seminar site
on the Thursday morning of seminar. Logistics Coordinators can either
be adult volunteers or seminar alumni.
Director of Assistant Coaches
This person is responsible for coordinating the activities of 40+
alumni who participate in the seminar every year. To ensure success,
this role requires a person with seminar and Assistant Coach experience.
Junior Coaches
Assistant Coaches are alumni of Northern Illinois Leadership Seminar
who utilize their experience attending previous seminars to enhance
the experience for new students.
